If you’re looking for a newborn photographer, you may run across a lot of websites that say that “newborn” portraits generally take place within the first two weeks of a baby’s life.  If you’re looking for super posed photos of your baby hanging out in fancy props, that’s absolutely a good rule of thumb because babies aren’t quite as able to curl up in the same ways the longer they’re earthside.  But for lifestyle portraits, I don’t think there is actually a reason to have such a hard and fast rule.

This little guy was born during the COVID winter — making his arrival just as the bitter cold was setting in and cases of the novel coronavirus were spiking like crazy.  His mom and dad really wanted to do in-home portraits of his as a young baby, but due to various family circumstances couldn’t quite take the risk of having someone come in to their home, even with lots of precautions, until baby N was almost two months old.  By the time I photographed this family last Thursday, not only had I had both doses of the Pfizer vaccine, but both of N’s parents had had their first doses as well, so we were all able to be a little more relaxed for their portrait session.

While no longer the tiniest of newborn babies, this little guy got to show off his burgeoning personality in a way that I only occasionally see from brand new squishes.  He was smiling, he was frowning, he had OPINIONS and wasn’t afraid to express them 🙂  We spent the session doing so many of his favorite things — snuggling with mom and dad, reading books, and just generally hanging out.  And I know these are images this family will be able to look back on and treasure in the years to come as he keeps growing.  So if you think you may have missed your window, don’t stress, and drop me a line — I’d love to capture your family’s magic!
